Five Wonderful Things
John 5:24

Introduction:

A. The relationship between the Father and the Son is such that it is impossible to believe in one without believing in the other. Jesus discusses this very relationship in John 5. Quite often men want to read into the test what is not there, using it to prove that one cannot fall from grace.

B. There is nothing in this verse that can be used to teach us such things, but it does teach us some wonderful things.

I. Privilege - Hearing The Word

A. Many in the world have never heard the gospel

1. Have never even seen a Bible

2. Not because opportunity wasn't presented - Col. 1:23; Acts 8:1-4

3. Someone made choice for them

B. Consider what we have in the Gospel

1. Word of God is effective - Heb 4:12

2. Word of God is incorruptible - 1 Pet 1:23; Matt. 24:35

3. Word of God gives us understanding - Psa 119:104-105

4. Word of God draws us to Christ - John 6:45

5. Word of God brings comfort to our hearts - 1 Thess. 4:18; Rom 15:4

C. Is it any wonder David could said, "the statutes of the Lord are right...." - Psa. 19:8

II. Person - God

A. God sent Jesus to save mankind - Rom 5:8

B. Through this act God showed His:

1. Love - John 3:16

2. Mercy - Eph 2:4-5; Titus 3:5

3. Grace - Eph 2:7-8

C. Therefore let thanks be given unto God - 1 Cor. 9:15

III. Possession - Everlasting Life

A. "Has everlasting life"

1. Not saying everlasting life is now

2. But is so certain can be spoken of as already possessed

B. Spiritual access to Christ, is means of everlasting life - John 1:4; 6:35; 17:3; 3:36; 6:47; Col. 3:4; 1 John 3:15-24, 5:13

C. Yet eternal life is future - Mk 10:29-30; Tit 1:2; Rom 8:24-25, 6:22, 2:7

D. It is now that our life is dependent on abiding in Christ - 1 Jn 1:3-6

IV. Promise - No Judgment (Condemnation)

A. Eternal security is conditional

1. It is through Faith - 1 Pet 1:5

2. We can lose our faith - Heb. 3:12; 1 Tim. 1:19; 5:12; 2 Tim. 2:18

3. Way we resist the devil is being firm in the faith - 1 Pet 5:9

B. He who HEARS the word and BELIEVES on God shall not come into condemnation - Jn 5:24

1. But is more than just listening

2. Means to lay hold (put into practice) the things presented

C. If one does this he will avoid condemnation in the last day - Jn 10:27-28

V. Passage - From Death To Life

A. Man as a sinner is dead in sin - Rom 3:23; Ezek. 18:20

B. God has given an avenue of escape - Eph 2:1, 5

C. In baptism we receive new life - Rom 6:4; 6:6-11

Conclusion:

A. While faith is important, it is the action produced by that faith that makes this passage from death to life possible.

B. If we have done what Jesus says, with all the implications, we can rest assured as to where we are standing.
